Because I am awed by light and the flux of life's unrepeatable moments I am a photographer. The camera’s ability to stop time and write with light makes the camera the most extraordinary tool for me to document life. As a documentary photographer, I have a naturalistic and spontaneous style. My editorial assignments have been published in Life, Natural History and Parenting Magazine to name a few. As a weekly photographic contributor for six years at The Village Voice, my photos documented the New York art and literary scene.
I began to photograph while studying abroad as an art major in Madrid, Spain. After graduating from the University of California at Davis with a B.A. in Art and Spanish, I moved to New York.
The focus of my documentary photography is on social and humanistic subjects, especially regarding the lives of women and children. I also photograph weddings in a photojournalistic/documentary style. Recently, I received my second international award for wedding photography. It will be included in a book entitled Friendship, Family, Love & Laughter in Oct. 2009
Nanny, my photographic essay about Latin and Caribbean immigrant women working as caregivers in New York was included in Al and Tipper Gore's recent book The Spirit of Family. It has also been published in Parenting, DoubleTake and Photo District News.
My photos of Mother Teresa at Tangra, a Moslem camp in India, are in private collections worldwide.
The Invisible Woman, an award winning photo documentary, looks at the lives of women who work as domestics in Brazil. (On my website www.pameladuffyphoto.com you can download a feature layout of these photographs, A mulher Invisivel as published in the Brazilian magazine Maria, Maria).
I have also worked as a still photographer on several motion picture shoots in New York City where I was based until 2001.
